Hardwood describes the tree species, not how dry the logs are. Oak, ash, beech and birch are commonly sold as firewood, but any load still needs suitable moisture content and dimensions for your appliance.

What to compare when buying hardwood logs

• Moisture information: ask for the stated moisture content and whether the logs are ready for immediate use.
• Species or mixture: hardwood is a broad category. Dense species can burn for longer, while lighter woods may be easier to establish.
• Log dimensions: check the stated length and split size against your stove or fireplace.
• Quantity: compare weight, loose-filled volume or stacked volume on the same basis rather than relying on a bag name.
• Delivered price: confirm whether VAT, delivery and any postcode surcharge are included.

Local delivery or collection?

Collection may suit a small trial order. For larger quantities, ask local suppliers about minimum orders, unloading access and whether the logs arrive loose, bagged or stacked. Our logs delivered guide explains how to compare those formats.
