Firewood quantity questions

How much wood does a 5kW stove use?

At a continuous useful output of 5 kW and 75% efficiency, this model estimates 1.63 kg of dry logs per hour. A stove rated at 5 kW may run below that output. Use your average heat output and the manufacturer’s efficiency, rather than assuming the rated maximum all evening.

How long does a bulk bag of logs last?

It depends on the bag’s actual volume and how you burn. Ask for its loose-filled volume in cubic metres, then enter it in the load-duration tool above. A bag name or “tonne bag” does not establish the volume or weight of logs inside it.

How much firewood do I need per day?

For the default four-hour evening at 3 kW average output and 75% efficiency, the model uses about 3.9 kg before reserve. Your daily amount changes with output, efficiency and hours; wood weight is an estimate, not a recommended firing rate.

Does the budget include all log-burner running costs?

No. It covers an illustrative wood purchase at your chosen loose-volume rates. Delivery, kindling, chimney sweeping, maintenance and installation are separate. Ask nearby suppliers for a quote for the quantity you need.

How the estimate works

Burning hours × average useful heat output ÷ efficiency gives fuel energy. We use 4.1 kWh/kg and 350–500 kg per stacked m³ for air-dry logs at 20% moisture, from Forest Research’s fuel reference. Your reserve is added before subtracting existing loose-volume stock.

Loose logs need more space than stacked logs. We use a planning conversion of 1.4–1.8 loose m³ per stacked m³; shape and packing vary. The range reflects density and packing assumptions, not a statistical forecast. Actual usage also depends on your appliance, burning habits and weather. A bulk bag is not a standard volume.

The 75% stove and 20% open-fire efficiencies are editable planning assumptions. Use your appliance’s published efficiency where available. Average heat while burning is not necessarily the stove’s rated maximum output. This tool estimates a chosen burning pattern, not whole-house heating demand.

Where the example prices come from

The starting £130–£165 per loose m³ uses two published seasoned-hardwood examples: Mid Devon Firewood (£130 for 1 m³) and The Firewood Company (£165 per loose m³), checked 11 September 2026. Both state VAT inclusion. Delivery is not calculated. These are reference examples, not a national market range or a quote for your postcode; change the rates to a supplier’s quote.

The budget multiplies the estimated volume by those rates. Whole-pack rounding, minimum orders, bulk discounts, delivery, kindling and stacking can change the final bill. Nearby listing prices are shown separately and are not silently used in this estimate. Where a dry-log product has an explicit loose volume and exact GBP price, the supplier results also show a whole-load estimate for your winter. That subtotal uses the observed price and excludes delivery and any VAT not already included.

Wood, moisture and your stove

This first calculator models dry logs at 20% moisture. Wet wood and different species can change the result. Check fuel suitability and log length against your appliance instructions. Kiln-dried and seasoned describe drying methods; confirm the actual moisture and pack quantity when ordering.
